Things to do & see
You’re perfectly placed here at Gwersyll Carneddau Camping to explore the best of what North Wales has to offer. From beaches and walks through woodland, to castles steeped in history and local places to eat and drink, there’s no shortage of things to do!
Places to eat
The Slate-Y-Llechan is a pub and restaurant just a mile down the road from the farm in Tal y Bont. They serve evening meals and a great Sunday roast. Their phone number is: 01248 355500
In Bangor there is a lovely coffee shop/ bar and restaurant called Blue Sky. They are open for breakfast and lunch 6 days a week and often have events on in the evening. Their phone number is: 01248 355444
The Victoria and the Anglesey Arms in Menai Bridge are both good pubs and serve nice food, there is a tapas bar in Menai Bridge called The Freckled Angel that is worth a visit too.
Out & About
When it is wet we recommend Pili Palas, a butterfly house with a petting farm and Meerkats, on Anglesey. Alternatively, the Sea Zoo is good to visit.
We’d also recommend the Greenwood Centre in Gwynedd (about 10 miles away), with its people-powered roller coaster and lots of other woodland rides and activities suitable for all ages.
Penrhyn Castle, which you can see below you, is worth a look around and has lovely gardens. The castle is National Trust-owned, as is Plas Newydd on Anglesey, where you can see the lovely "Trompe de l’oeil" painting by Henry Whistler and walk in the gardens by the Menai Straits.
Beaumaris is a pretty town across the Menai Straits where you can visit the 13th Century castle (one of many in North Wales!), fish for crabs, grab a boat around Puffin Island and buy delicious Red Boat ice cream!
Just 4 miles and 15-minutes’ drive away is Zip World in Bethesda, where you can experience the world’s fastest zip line over Penrhyn Quarry.
Treborth Botanical Gardens, right by the Menai Bridge is beautiful, with collections of plants from all over the world.
South Stack, Holyhead is a great RSPB reserve where you can see a wide range of birds and spectacular cliffs and lighthouse.
Natural Wonders
We like to go to the beach at Rhosneigr, many people love Trearddur bay with its sandy beach and Sea Shanty café.
If you don’t want to go too far, Llanfairfechan is closer and avoids the queues on the bridges. You can walk from the car park on the front all the way to Penrhyn castle and on into Bangor on the coastal path.
You are welcome to wander around the farm and see the sheep, cattle and ponies. Please just leave gates as you find them and take care around the animals, they are friendly but need to be treated with respect.
There are a few footpaths locally and the Carneddau Mountains are just up the road. They are beautiful and are quieter than the mountains up the Ogwen Valley. You can walk all the way to Aber Falls over the mountain. To help plan your trip, we have maps you can borrow.
