Gwersyll Carneddau Camping is based at Tyddyn Isaf Farm, situated amongst 56 acres of grassland and woodland, with grazing for our sheep flock on the Carneddau mountains just up the road. Andrew and Hilary Kehoe have been farming here for nearly 50 years, having taken over from Andrew’s Aunt and Uncle; the family has been here for 5 generations!
Our Farm
Tyddyn Isaf Farm is unlike most other farms. How we manage the land means that we allow nature to thrive. The farm may look a bit shaggy and overgrown in places; this is just because we are making space for nature and encouraging wildlife. We have hares, linnets, orchids, stock doves and lots of other interesting wildlife on the farm as we don’t use any fertiliser or chemicals here.
Our Campsite
We have 6 cozy pitches on level areas in a 4-acre slightly sloping field. Settled within the expanse of our nearly 60-acre farm, our campsite allows our guests the opportunity to relax and unwind amongst wild surroundings, to take in the birdsong and spectacular scenic panoramas, whilst also having a plethora of activities and opportunities for adventure on our doorstep. With beautiful views overlooking the Menai Straits to Anglesey, and Puffin Island with the Carneddau Mountains behind the farm,
Our Flora & Fauna
Being based amongst the Carneddau mountains, the landscape around Gwersyll Carneddau Camping and the wider farm has shaped how we live. Our sheep flock of 200 Welsh Mountain ewes grazes up in the mountains all summer, as they have done for over 300 years. They are hefted to their range on the mountain, learning their home up there (called a Cynefin in Welsh) when they first go up as lambs with their mothers.
We also have a herd of 20 pure Highland and Hereford cross cows. They are busy grazing several nature reserves in Gwynedd and Anglesey to benefit wildlife. They encourage Lapwings, leeches, butterflies and orchids as they graze.
We have a herd of semi feral Carneddau ponies, a rare breed with only 350 breeding mares on the mountain. We use them for conservation grazing too, they are great personalities! You may meet Tyson the Carneddau grazing with our grandchildren’s ponies Charlie the cob and Hunter the Welsh Mountain pony.
We work for several conservation organisations, looking after their nature reserves and creating wildflower meadows along many of the main roads all the way from Wrexham to Holyhead!
Facilities
Our campsite has a drinking water supply, as well as compost toilets, hot showers and a campfire pit for each pitch. We also have recycling and general waste bins.
